There are many steps in getting a national monument built.
- Legislation (current phase): the bill must be passed by both Congress and the Senate You can help by contacting your Congressman and Senator and asking them to support the bill for the Military Spouse Monument. -Ask your friends and family to contact their representatives. -Call or write in honor of a friend, relative, or neighbor who is or was a military spouse. (i.e. "Please support the Military Spouse Monument in honor of my grandmother who was a military spouse during World War II.")
-Volunteer and help support local and national military related organizations -Connect with your military family neighbors and continue to build a sense of community and appreciation (cook out together, offer to have your son mow the lawn while the service member is deployed, send a card to your senior military family on holidays, etc.) -If you know of a family of a fallen warrior and want to help, please visit http://www.nmfa.org/site/DocServer/July_2007_Final.pdf?docID=10421 to learn how. -Reach out and share your appreciation for military spouses and families around you, including those previous service generations - we share similar stories and they've been in your shoes! (Invite them to spouse and family functions, thank them for their service to our country, ask them to share their stories and lessons learned, etc.) -Mentor other military spouses -If you're a military family, educate yourself on programs available -If military, attend command/community functions - get involved with your military community (ombudsman and FRG functions, etc.) and connect with other families -Learn some of the history on military spouses - check out a book at your local library, search the internet, ask a former spouse to share her story, find inspiration in the strength of others and yourself!
